What does "Split Testing" mean?

Split Testing:
Split Testing (also known as A/B Testing) is a long established analog direct marketing technique where one randomly serves two different versions (the "split") of an ad or offer to one's prospects, in order to determine which one pulls in the most sales or generates the most responses. This has been being done since the early 20th century. On a website it is easily done with JavaScript, serving different pages or displaying different offers to visitors based on random factors, to determine which page or offer pulls the best response or makes the most sales. Typically the best offer or page wins out and is implemented, and the other one is discontinued.
